GEETAI SUSHRUSHA

2019 | Mehkar (India)

The Indian state of Maharashtra has one of the highest concentrations of trained specialist doctors in the country. The well-distributed number of doctors, all over the state stands testimony to the developing medical infrastructure of Maharashtra.‘Sushrusha’, is one such Hospital cum Residence for a Doctors’ Family in the Buldhana District of Maharashtra. The building form adheres to basic building bylaws. While doing so, special attention has been given to the climatic response of the building, making it one of the initial climatically sensitive structures of the Vidarbha Region of Maharashtra, known for its hot summers & cool winters. The rectangular form takes a veil of blinds and louvers, designed to shelter the building from the harsh sunlight, while delicately letting in the cool breeze through innumerable holes in these louvers. The site which has the advantage of Road frontages on both shorter sides has been exploited to give due separation for the Private & Public interfaces of the building, with dedicated entrances. This guarantees Privacy to the Doctor Family Members while retaining critical movement from the other side at all hours. This will be one of the initial attempts at serious design emphasis on climate responsive architecture in the rural districts of Maharashtra.
